The Story of the Shepherd Boy

In the heart of the captivating rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His life was pure, simple, and honest. His main role was mainly to care for his flock of sheep.

Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind through the solo tree on the mountaintop were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his wards inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.

Yet, there were occasional moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would yearn for companionship. In one such instance from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.

Tales of predators prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a joke on the villagers.

One afternoon he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but found nothing threatening.

The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This trick laughed for a few days more. However, one day, a real wolf actually charge at the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf.
